1986 – the year the automobile celebrated its 100th anniversary. The same year was also the birth-year of the Mercedes-Benz Modellauto-Club e.V., in short: MBMC. Four passionate collectors came together, and in November 1986 created and registered the MBMC with the Stuttgart District Court. As well, the then Daimler-Benz AG gave their green light to the MBMC being registered as the “Umbrella-organization of all Mercedes-Benz model-car clubs”.
In time, collectors of models of all scales, ranging from 1:220th to 1:4th, have joined the MBMC to devote themselves to their mutual hobby. In addition to the various scales, there are numerous collection themes, starting with the model line collectors, the friends of old and new Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, commercial vehicles, busses, racing cars, special-purpose vehicles, etc…
The first MBMC-Journal was published at the beginning of 1987, and its layout having been improved several times over the years, still is published quarterly, providing the club-members with interesting information and reports over more than 40 pages.
Over the years, the MBMC succeeded time and again to be noticed regionally as well as nationally. In 1988, in one of the largest scale-model exhibitions ever, the Daimler-Benz Museum displayed more than 2000 scale-models in over 60 display-cases.
During the following years, the club made an appearance on a variety of occasions: at the launch of new Mercedes-Benz cars, during the International Automobile Exhibition in Frankfurt, in museums, at model-car swap-meets, and during appearances of club members and of their collections on radio and on TV, in model related publications and beyond.
The MBMC offered its support to prominent authors and to the editorial staff of specialized publications, providing them with information, data tabulations and background knowledge about collecting.
The club life takes place in regular meetings of the nine regional clubs, which are spread across Germany. In addition, the MBMC succeeded in creating and in actively running strong club representations in the Netherlands, in North America, as well as in Russia.
The farthest satellites are found in South Africa and in Australia.
The MBMC enjoys a permanent membership of over 500 collectors, who have dedicated themselves to scale-models and to the club life. It is worth pointing out, that not only men are collecting Mercedes-Benz models. We can proudly say, that women are well represented in the Club. The Annual General Meeting, mandated to take place each year by the club statutes, reunites the “hard core” of the MBMC collectors.
The climax of these gatherings, which bring together roughly 100 people (club members and their partners), always consists of a gala evening with a raffle.
These gatherings also show the excellent co-operation between the MBMC and the Mercedes-Benz Organization, without whose support getting ahead would not be as easy.
Besides presenting itself, the MBMC always offers its members extraordinary and desirable limited-edition models, which have a high collector’s value. Since the creation of the MBMC in 1986, more than 20 such special models have been released, all imprinted with the Club’s logo. The models projected by the MBMC came to fruition thanks to the longtime relationships and good contacts to various manufacturers. Most of the time, these models are made by various 1:87-scale manufacturers, principally by Herpa. But the MBMC commissions as well the development and manufacture of models in very small quantities specifically and exclusively for the club-members. Additionally, other items “around the star”, such as tie clips, car-badges or MBMC-pins are made available to the members, to enable them to display their club-affiliation to the outside world.
The MBMC offers other services to its members: besides the club’s own extensive data-bank, which contains innumerable descriptions of models and other information, there is the MBMC-shop which offers various models and accessories at special prices, or the so-called MBMC model car subscription, another collector highlight. The subscription allows the members to get rare advertising or other special models.
As well, specialists from a variety of areas of the scale-model field are at the ready to answer questions and provide information. To provide information about the latest models, the MBMC News-Flash is published on a monthly basis. This News-Flash is even more up-to-date than the MBMC-Journal in presenting descriptions of new Mercedes-Benz branded model releases.
The aims of the MBMC which were spelled out in 1986 are still as valid as back then:
- To assist the club members in their collecting of Mercedes-Benz models.
- To provide information about old and new Mercedes-Benz scale-models and about the real cars and their history.
- To organize model car exhibitions and meetings of like-minded collectors.
- To maintain contacts to dealers and manufacturers,
- To suggest and offer support in the manufacturing of special models,
- To build an archive of Mercedes-Benz scale-model cars.
- To assist Daimler AG during the introduction of new vehicles, or during fairs and exhibitions – for instance by providing suitable scale-models for the decoration of display cases and windows.
